A tense and controversial encounter involving U.S. federal immigration agents outside a Portland hospital has reignited nationwide debates over immigration enforcement, use of force, and civil rights. On Thursday afternoon, two people were shot and wounded during a vehicle stop conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents near Adventist Health Hospital. By nightfall, hundreds of protesters had gathered outside the ICE building, demanding accountability and an end to federal immigration operations in Oregon’s largest city.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the incident occurred during a “targeted vehicle stop” involving a passenger described as a “Venezuelan illegal alien affiliated with the Tren de Aragua transnational prostitution ring.” Federal officials claim the passenger was connected to a recent shooting in Portland.

When agents identified themselves, DHS said the driver attempted to run them over with the vehicle. An agent then fired what the department called a “defensive shot,” wounding both the driver and the passenger before the vehicle fled the scene.

Portland police later found a man and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds in a residential area several miles away. Officers applied a tourniquet to one of the victims before transporting them for medical care. Their conditions were not immediately disclosed.
