Increased federal law enforcement

President Donald Trump has ordered an increased federal law enforcement presence on the streets of Washington, D.C., in a bold move to curb crime and “restore safety” in the nation’s capital. The White House confirmed late Thursday that a multi-agency operation would begin at midnight and last for at least seven days.

“Washington, D.C. is an amazing city, but it has been plagued by violent crime for far too long,” said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. “President Trump has directed an increased presence of federal law enforcement to protect innocent citizens.”

The deployment follows a recent high-profile attack on Edward Coristine — also known as “Big Balls” — a top official in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), who was injured in an attempted carjacking by teenagers. Two 15-year-olds were arrested, and more suspects are being sought.

"There Will Be No Safe Harbor for Criminals," Trump Says

The federal initiative, launched under Trump’s “Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force”, includes officers from:

  • U.S. Park Police

  • DEA

  • Homeland Security Investigations

  • U.S. Marshals

  • ATF

  • Federal Protective Service

  • U.S. Capitol Police

  • U.S. Attorney’s Office

  • Amtrak and Metro Transit Police

The agents will be highly visible and in marked units, with daily roll calls at a centralized command center. Trump’s team confirmed the operation could be extended “as needed.”

Could Trump Take Full Control of Washington?

Trump has reignited talks of repealing the Home Rule Act of 1973, which gives the District limited autonomy. “We have a capital that’s very unsafe,” Trump said. “We have to run D.C.”

On Truth Social, Trump warned:

“If D.C. doesn’t get its act together… we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City.”

He even floated the idea of deploying the National Guard “very quickly” if needed.

D.C. Crime Stats: A Mixed Picture

While Trump cites rising violence, Mayor Muriel Bowser's office has highlighted declining homicide and carjacking rates:

  • Carjackings dropped from 957 in 2023 to under 500 in 2024

  • Fewer than 200 carjackings have been recorded so far in 2025

Still, Trump argues these improvements aren't enough to guarantee public safety in the capital.

Why This Matters

Trump’s move marks one of the strongest federal interventions in D.C. policing in decades, reigniting debates over local autonomy, crime policy, and presidential authority. With 2026 midterms on the horizon, the security of the nation's capital may become a defining political battleground.
